Presentation: Music, Utopia and Social Change

Various utopian visions of better societies have seen music as a tool for building social cohesion, while dystopian writers have warned about the manipulative power of sound, rhythm and music. Where is the line between harmony and tyranny? Drawing on music and utopia research, the history of political, trade union and creative movements in the post-USSR region and his own study of Belarusian rave communities, researcher and electronic musician Pavel Niakhayeu will discuss the role of music in social transformations.
