Bio

Joey Holder

Joey Holder is a visual artist whose work raises philosophical questions concerning the universe and the unknown, investigating future sciences, medicine, biology and human-machine interactions. Working with a hand-picked team of experts, she makes immersive, multimedia installations that explore how we experience non-human, natural and technological forms, testing the limits of humanity in the process.

She has connected with computational geneticists, marine biologists, behavioral psychologists and investigative journalists to address themes including future farming, synthetic biology and deep sea ecosystems. Juxtaposing biology, nanotechnology and natural history with app interfaces, screensavers and measuring devices, she suggests the impermanence and interchangeability of these apparently contrasting and oppositional worlds: "everything is a mutant and a hybrid".

Linking forms that have emerged through human taste, culture and industrial processes she studies complex systems that dissolve notions of the ‘natural’ and the ‘artificial’. GM products, virtual biology and aquatic creatures are incorporated into an extended web, challenging our perception of evolution, adaptation and change. Holder has exhibited in spaces across the UK and internationally, including the Harvard Museum of Natural History, Athens Biennale, Design Museum, Moscow Biennale, Transmediale and Venice Biennale.
