LE MARDI GRAS LISTENING COLLECTIVE WITH NIKKI NAIR DANCE MANIA’S GHETTO HOUSE NIHILISMUS

Though initially overshadowed by the Chicago house sound of Trax and DJ International, the relentless energy and chaos characterising the Dance Mania label have had a massive influence on contemporary electronic music. As well as providing the ‘90s blueprint for the disco-cut-up style that Daft Punk would globalise, the productions of DJ Deeon, DJ Funk, Paul Johnson, Wax Master, DJ Milton and Jana Rush generated a combinatronic 125-165 BPM matrix that continues to warp and reshape the recombinative possibilities of house, ghetto house, juke and footwork. In this session – as part of the Le Mardi Listening Collective’s ongoing project ‘Unhoused Music’ – Dhanveer Singh Brar and Louis Moreno together with Nikki Nair will discuss a selection of Dance Mania tracks, focusing on the Black musical innovations of DJ Deeon and Paul Johnson’s productions.
