It’s the Second Day of Unsound! Here’s What’s On!
It’s the second day of Unsound, and the first day of our expansive discourse program, including discussions, presentations, workshops and reading groups, mostly taking place at the Unsound Festival Office at Pałac Krzysztofory.
Once again, remember that you can also come to the Unsound festival office at Pałac Krzysztofory today, from 12pm - 6pm, to exchange your pass for a wristband, or purchase tickets to events not yet sold out. Find the latest ticket info check here, or keep up to date via Telegram. Join the Unsound community on Discord to chat about Unsound, and make new festival buddies!
The discourse program bubble pops opens at 1pm, with ARTnews and Art in America editor Andy Battaglia presenting a talk inspired by Unsound's Bubbles theme, on art that explores fermentation, decomposition and decay. Afterward, Borshch Magazine's Mariana Berezovska, dogheadsurigeri from Oramics, curator Łukasz Warna-Wiesławski and writer Maya Baklanova investigate the parameters of "Eastern European" identity, before Mexican-American sonic archaeologist Debit, rhythmanalyst DeForrest Brown Jr. and Yennu Ariendra from Raja Kirik discuss musical resistance to colonisation. Polish musician, composer and instrument builder Wojciech Rusin rounds out the day in conversation with journalist Jennifer Lucy Allan, diving headfirst into his unique speculative medieval music. Each of these presentations is at Pałac Krzysztofory – and it's all absolutely free.
At 7pm at Łaźnia Nowa Theatre in Nowa Huta, Poland's own Pimpon takes the Bubbles theme quite literally, harnessing the sounds of carbonated drinks to guide an exclusive ASMR-friendly listening session. Lucrecia Dalt is next, performing her new album ¡Ay! for the very first time; it's an exciting prospect, with the Colombian artist sublimating Afro-Latin rhythmic templates in narrative-rich speculative sci-fi mystique. Then we're coaxed into the post-punk avant-garde by the legendary Japanese artist Phew – best known for her work with members of Can, DAF and Einsturzende Neubauten. Save some energy for our last performance of the evening, though, a humid collision of Black, queer theatre and Latin American heavy metal from performance artist and rapper Mykki Blanco and Samuel Acevedo, who come together as EXPAT. Tickets available online, at the office and will be available at the door.
Note: unfortunately the Nyege Nyege Surprise afterparty on the morning of Sunday 16th October will not be going ahead, but we promise to make up for this in 2023. The good news is that instead Warsaw’s legendary Mazury Club will present an afterparty blurring the lines between club event and performance art, including Jśa experimental yet pop-influenced sound, a fast-paced set from k.i.o.s.k, Julek Ploski and Warsaw based drag queen and musician LAVA. Expect the unexpected! Tickets on sale later today.
Finally, you can download the Unsound booklet onto your phone here, in English and Polish language – we print limited copies of the booklet for those who’d like a memento of the festival. You can also download a Ukrainian language version here.
