How do women talk about themselves online? How do they construct their online identities? In her book Girl Online Joanna Walsh draws on her personal experience to explore the different roles she plays IRL in relation to her avatar and her narrative. She investigates not only the content but, more importantly, the forms of the discourse and spaces available to her, from the tone of tabloid sensationalism to selfies, journalistic tweets and poetry. Does virtual space provide new modes of emancipation? Or does it merely present new modes of oppression?
