A Winged Victory For The Sullen is the new collaborative project between Stars of The Lid founder Adam Bryanbaum Wiltzie and composer Dustin O'Halloran. On their first album, drifting guitar washed melodies and piano are juxtaposed with strings, french horn and bassoon to create an expansive ambient sound. Boomkat wrote of it: "We can't think of many albums of recent times that have so skilfully balanced droning minimalism with open, expressive melody; the results are completely bewitching... This is a grief-stricken album, make no mistake, but the sheer artistry at work makes it a resoundingly uplifting listen."

One of the central pieces on the album is "Requiem for the Static King Part 1," an elegy created in memory of Mark Linkous of Sparklehorse, who died in 2010.

Guest artists on the album include Icelandic cellist Hildur Gudnadottir and violonist Peter Broderick.
