Maria Minerva

Estonian Maria Minerva has gained attention over the last year for songs released on 12",  cassette and a bunch of Youtube clips. Now, she has also put out her debut LP on Not Not Fun, called "Cabaret Cixous."

The music is full of Maria's spectral vocals. There's a strong pop sensibiliity, but one submerged in lo-fi recording techniques, with new age synths and a dubby kind of disco woven throughout. Indeed, there are many contradictions and tensions in her work. As Resident Advisor wrote in a review of her album: "Minerva falls somewhere between obscurity and anticipation, like she's moving towards an ultimately pop future that she'll never really reach. (Or even wants to.)"

Like her contemporaries on Not Not Fun such as LA Vampires and Peaking Lights, Maria is taking from the past to create her sound and image. This, fortunately, is not without humour (perhaps best evidenced by the sleeve art for "Cabaret Cixous"... we think...)

We have little idea of what her live show will be like, but can't wait to find out when Maria Minerva appears as part of the Not Not Fun showcase.
