Unsound News Day 4: Wednesday October 2

Welcome to Unsound Day 4

Welcome to Unsound Day 4.

We hope you made it home in time from the Unsound Karaoke, because at 11:00 (doors 10:30) it’s time for the third Morning Glory at the beautiful Kopernika 15, by Krakow jazz experimentalist Marek Pospieszalski, who will present a debut collaboration with Swiss percussionist Julian Sartorius, as part of a SHAPE+ residency. This will be followed at 12:00 by Only Allies: Non-Humans in the Palestinian Struggle, a “storytelling and music event” by Palestinian musician and researcher Bint Mbareh.

Then make your way to the festival office at Krzysztofory Palace, where we present the festival discourse program – and you can also have a coffee, get your festival wristband, buy tickets and merch.

At 13:30 Wassim Z. Alsindi of 0xSalon will present A God That Does Play Dice, a game to destabilise the idea of a panel discussion. Participants include: researcher/artist Eryk Salvaggio, percussionist/composer Valentina Magaletti and Leyland Kirby aka The Caretaker. At 14:45, Steve Goodman (aka Kode9) and feminist sound scholar Marie Thompson each give a presentation revisiting past books in the present: Goodman with Sonic Warfare, and Thompson with Beyond Unwanted Sound: Noise, Affect and Aesthetic Moralism. Afterward, they will engage in discussion with one another and the audience.

After a break, musician Bill Callahan will engage in a live conversation with music writer Philip Sherburne, to talk about his artistic evolution, approach to songwriting and more, from the early days as Smog through to albums such as Shepherd in a Sheepskin Vest and Ytilaer, released under his own name.

The evening music program takes place at Łaźnia Nowa Theatre in Nowa Huta, where doors open at 19:30. SHAPE+ artist duo Tarta Relena, with the premiere of new music from their upcoming album És pregunta, updating Catalan folk music. Following is a suite of works by Mica Levi, performed by Sinfonietta Cracovia, one of the leading chamber ensembles in Poland, founded by Penderecki. The works performed at Unsound will include entirely new compositions. Belarussian artist and activist Jana Shostak will perform a screaming intervention. This show is sold out.

The official Unsound Opening Party takes place late at night at Poczta Główna, in the city’s former Central Post Office. Swiss percussionist Julian Sartorius will open with a drum set, followed by DJ sets from DJ E (aka Chuquimamani-Condori), upsammy, ¥ØU$UK€ ¥UK1MAT$U and Unsound residents Olivia and Chino going b2b. Please note that this party is not included in the Festival Pass - tickets are sold out online. We may sell some at the door after midnight - but no guarantee.
