Description

The concepts of predictability, determinism and order were paramount to the scientific mindset of the 20th century. At the turn of the millennium, it has become apparent that noise is not simply their “disorganised” counterpart, but holds the conceptual means to move beyond rigid dichotomies. As we move further into a digital, automated, hyperconnected world amidst a cascade of upheavals and crises, the meaning of noise changes again and demands to be rethought.

This workshop consists of a dialogue and collective diagramming session. The Noise Research Union (Cécile Malaspina, Inigo Wilkins, Martina Raponi, Mattin, Miguel Prado & Sonia de Jager) will discuss the different meanings of noise, identify common lines of thought and explore these in more depth through diagrams. After having split into groups, participants will reconvene and present the diagrams to each other. The NRU approach is non-disciplinary and open to questions and challenges; they are united by their interest in noise, not by their personal interpretations.
