Description

Unsound was founded in 2003, at a time when the city of Kraków was undergoing rapid transformation more than a decade after the collapse of communism. Abandoned spaces and unique venues were plentiful. Now, impacted by development and inflation, Kraków is very different – and as a result, so is Unsound. For the first event of the festival, Unsound founder and Artistic Director Mat Schulz will take a group on a sound walk through lost venues, in a Remembrance of Festivals Past that is focused on active listening to one’s surroundings. This will include erased factories upon which building developments now stand, Hotel Forum, and a 15th-century church from which we were thrown out, accused of being Satanists. “The aim is to hear the ghosts of the past in the noise of the present,” says Mat Schulz, “and to contemplate the future of both Unsound and Kraków. As we walk and listen, our presence in these spaces might be noticeable, but this is also the idea – we are odd reminders of Unsound’s traces; in a way we are ghosts ourselves.”
