OSCILLATION
Description
Veteran field recordist Chris Watson joins Poland’s Izabela Dłużyk for the commissioned work Białowieża, based on recordings from Puszcza Białowieska, Europe's last remaining primaeval forest. Since late 2021, migrants trying to cross into the EU from Belarus have been dying in the forest, pushed back by border guards. The natural sounds of Puszcza Białowieska have therefore taken on shadowy layers of meaning. Conducted in darkness, the live show also evokes Izabela’s experience of the world as a sightless person from birth, where her perception of sound is heightened. Note: Chris and Izabela will perform from the centre of the room.
Following is ML Buch, Danish musician, composer and producer, whose DIY pop has a “hyperreal gleam” (Pitchfork), shifting effortlessly between the past and present. Her live shows build out her intimate productions with open-tuned 7-string guitars and synths. Closing is bona fide noise legend Lasse Marhaug, who has collaborated with some of extreme music's most pivotal figures, from Sunn O))) to Merzbow. His recent music, released on Smalltown Supersound, displays a jaw-dropping control of dynamics, swaying between noise and silence, chaos and harmony. A new album is coming around the Unsound show.
Białowieża is commissioned by Unsound, Atonal, Semibreve and Sónar, as part of the TIMES Platform.
