Discussion: Westsplaining

Description

Although the war in Ukraine began eight years ago, Russia's full-scale invasion has brought the conflict to the forefront of European media. Western experts are quick to define causes of the invasion that do not always align with the perspectives of Ukraine and its neighbours, who have coined a neologism for this phenomenon: westsplaining, the condescending discourse of Western commentators who think they know best how Ukrainians should fight for their country. What does the West not see when it looks at Ukraine? Can the war lead to the political emancipation of Europe's eastern periphery, and does it pose an opportunity  or a threat to European democracy? Moderated by Kaja Puto with visual artist Yulia Krivich, journalist Tatiana Kozak and political scientist Jan Smoleński.
