Way back in 2009, Yosuke Fujita's fixation on unheard sounds and noises prompted him to develop his own unique instrument, an eccentric pipe organ that features only 11 pipes, doesn't have a keyboard, and is powered by an air pump he based on a traditional blacksmith's device. The wheezing sound was central to 2020's breakout 'iki', that took the structure of Japanese gagaku court music and reimagined it as graceful, phantasmic drones. And on this year's 'MMM', he upgraded to electric organ, freeing him to wander around the instrument with microphones to create hallucinogenic rhythms by capturing its unusual resonance and juxtapose the sounds with his unique vocalizations. He's been developing his own vocal style for over a decade, creating a "third voice" from the stress of inhaling and exhaling, and it has to be heard to be believed - somewhere between free jazz and Inuit throat singing.
