Through a talk named after his last Don't DJ album, Florian Meyer discusses exoticism - is it a symptom of western imperialism or of cultural hybridisation? Cultures have always shown phenomena of xenophilia and xenophobia, but how are we to deal with the dissolving of cultural identities in a postcolognial global culture? The talk will investigate theory and music on topics ranging from the writings of naval doctor Victor Segalen (1878-1919) to the tweets of contemporary pop-singer Azealia Banks.
